A Letter from
the Head of School

Dear Friends,
Founded in the years following our
Civil War, Oregon Episcopal School has
witnessed 132 years of the history of the
United Slates and the world. During all
those years, teachers and students have
struggled to make sense of world events,
while at the same time laying a firm
foundation of knowledge, skills, and
judgment to provide students with the
ability to participate in the affairs of the
world to come. Thus, in December of 1941, students were
struggling to absorb and understand the onset of war, to learn
its causes, and to make sense of the fact that a beloved fellow
student, a girl from Japan, had just become “the enemy.”
The young women from St. Helen’s Hall were taught that
their minds and hearts were needed in the world. The
Sisters of St. John Baptist, in particular, recognized and cele
brated the talents and commitments of the students they
taught, thus establishing a rich tradition of intellectual
achievement combined with civic responsibility. Our alumni
speak with one voice when they describe the legacy of their
years at St. Helen’s Hall, Bishop Dagwell Hall, and OES.
We are now facing a lime in our history when it is of
central importance that our students develop wisdom and a
commitment to being global citizens. The complexity of the
challenges facing our leaders in the light of September 11 th,
here in the United Stales and around the world, informs our
work here al OES as well. Now, more than ever, our interna
tional focus will help our students to understand the
difficult choices our country faces.
Our program at school is designed to give our children a
developmentally appropriate level of awareness and concern
about current events. Thus, our youngest students, who are
only four years old, learn how to be good citizens of their
classroom. Older students in Lower School focus on projects
of material aids for the homeless in Portland and for chil
dren in need around the world. Middle Schoolers learn

about global issues, and their service pro
jects involve traveling around Portland to
offer services to a wide range of people
through local agencies. Upper Schoolers
have the benefit of studying with our res
idential students from around the world,
as well as classes and activities that directly
address the major issues of the day.
The difference between the challenges
OES has always faced in shaping respon
sible citizens, and the challenges we face today, have largely
to do with the increasing sophistication of the media and its
central focus on the violent occurrences of September 11 th
and since. It is now impossible to protect our young children
from the violent images of destruction, the understanding of
the death toll on the East Coast or of extreme poverty of
Afghanistan and other nations around the world. The
danger is that our children absorb these images before they
have the context or sophistication to understand them, or
the sense that something can be done to help or change a
situation.
Helping our students to become global citizens means
maintaining a balance between a sense of security in family
and school and a growing understanding of the world and
its problems. The balancing act is often a difficult one.
Together we must develop strong and confident graduates,
who are neither overwhelmed by the challenges before them
nor unwilling to use their talents for the greater good of our
country and our world. Rather, we strive together to help
our children become citizens of the world, wise and skilled
in their ability to build community wherever they are.

THE OES COMMUNITY RESPONDS
On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, The
Reverend LouAnn Pickering says she was up earlier than
usual when she turned on the television and learned of the
events unfolding on the East Coast. Within minutes, she
received a call from Head of School Dulany Bennett, and
they began talking about what was happening and how the
school could best serve the needs of its students.
These initial conversations also involved Cindy McEnroe,
Middle School counselor and coordinator of Counseling
Services. According to Cindy, all of the divisions needed to
“think on their feel” and draw upon the strength of the OES
community in order to cooperate and collaborate in devel
oping a plan of action for the day.
Their goal was to maintain as much of the school day
routine as possible, while creating an environment where
children would feel safe and secure. They also wanted to
provide students with information to help them understand
what had happened, and with options and resources in order
for the students to care for themselves and each other. With
a rough blueprint on how to proceed, the school day began.

Gold spoke to the children, reassuring them that they were
safe and that the school would take care of them until they
returned home. Then, Rev. Pickering opened the floor to the
students to allow them to speak out, sharing their concerns
and questions, along with their confusion, fright, worry,
sadness and anger.
PROVIDING CHOICES

As students began to arrive in the Middle and Upper
Schools, the divisions found some students knew of the
events in New York City and Washington, D.C., while
others were unaware of what had transpired. At the
morning gatherings, faculty members explained the tragedy
that was unfolding, answering questions as best as they
could. In addition, all students were presented with options
for their school day. Televisions remained on in the Upper
School library and the Middle School Endeavour Commons,
allowing students to watch the news reports accompanied
by adults who offered additional perspective. Other students
returned to class and their normal routines, with each class
room teacher prepared to talk further with students as
needed. Students could also choose to talk with a counselor,
chaplain or other adult. Some chose to walk the OES
labyrinth. Whatever choice they made, students were asked
to honor the diverse groups and beliefs represented by the
student body, and to be loving and supportive to one
another in this time of need.

MAINTAINING THE DAILY ROUTINE

OREGON
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL

For the Lower School, maintaining the daily routine
meant starting Tuesday with a regularly scheduled chapel
service. As the bell rang to call the children to the morning
chapel, Rev. Pickering noticed others joining with them.
Parishioners, faculty, staff and parents came also, silting in
the back or with their children. Both Dr. Bennett and Mrs.

came and walked. They held each other. They sat in the
center. They prayed.
One teacher said, “The labyrinth was like a rock in a sea
of chaos.” In response to a great desire to do something,
Shelley explains, “The ancient path of the labyrinth allowed
individuals, both young and old, to do two very simple, yet
profound things: people could walk and they could pray.”

Throughout the day. Lower School students also had
opportunities to express their fears, sadness and anger,
while wrapped in the security of the OES community. First
grade teacher Christine O’Toole appreciated this attention
to caring for the children. “I was very grateful that Dulany
and Sidney made both human and spiritual resources avail
able to us.”

had experienced in his five years as a patrol officer.
Keith shared his anger and frustration with not being able
to help the individuals trapped in the twin lowers. He
praised the heroic efforts of his co-workers and other emer
gency personnel who lost their lives as the lowers collapsed.
He thanked those who provided food, water, equipment and
resources to himself and others desperately searching for
survivors. He answered questions from students wanting to
know more, and Keith asked that his story be passed along
so others would fully understand the extent of the devasta
tion and destruction.
RECOGNIZING OUR EFFORTS

▲ NYPD Officer Keith Chhe (right) and a coworker pause briefly
from their search and rescue work at the World Trade Center.

The school’s response has lasted longer than a day, a week
or a month, and has gone beyond the confines of the
campus. As we continue to carry prayers in our hearts for
those who suffered from the tragic losses, we have also acted
upon those thoughts and emotions. The entire OES commu
nity has contributed in a variety of ways—from giving blood
to fundraising, reflecting the very best of what the OES com
munity represents.
Upper School teacher Hope Stevens expressed the need to
acknowledge the efforts of all, and especially of the faculty
and staff who have continued to do their jobs since
September 11, making life as normal as possible for students
regardless of the impact of events on themselves. “We arc all
doing our jobs and would not do otherwise, but it does lake
its loll.”
The events of September 11, 2001 have taken a loll on all
of the country. Fortunately, the strength of the OES commu
nity has allowed the school to take care of its own and to
extend a hand of comfort to those impacted, both near and
far. As Officer Keith Chhe remarked in closing his presenta
tion, “In one way or another, we are all affected by this.” ■

large...it is the thought and gesture that counts.” Those who
did contribute added their words of sympathy and support
to cards to be sent to the appropriate departments in New
York City.
Sue acknowledged the many efforts and options to
actively respond to the day’s events. “While this (establish
ing the fund) is the OES community’s gesture to help in a
positive way, this is not the only way to contribute. There
are many great needs in New York City. Many of us are
doing a variety of projects, and whatever we do to help is a
blessed gift received.” She also asked, “Please continue to
keep those who are in the midst of conflict or suffering in
your prayers.”
OPENING OUR DOORS

One of those individuals in the prayers of the OES com
munity is Kowa “Keith” Chhe, a family friend of Middle
School parent Jill Scheer. On the afternoon of October 4, a
little over three weeks after that infamous day of terror, a
small group of Upper School students, faculty and staff
members gathered in a classroom to listen to Keith’s story of
his firsthand experience at the World Trade Center.
Keith, a police officer with the New York Police
Department, had spent three weeks digging through the
rubble of the World Trade Center, at limes almost non-stop,
looking for survivors, and as lime elapsed looking for
bodies. He had come to Oregon in order to find relief,
however temporary, from the rescue work which left him
both physically and emotionally tired.
Despite the freshness of the memories and the loss he
experienced, Keith shared his recollections and perspectives
on this painful event with the small, quiet audience. He
described how the day’s events unfolded for him, starting
with the time he signed off his weekly shift al 8:15 a.m. on the
morning of September 11. He had been working out of the
police headquarters, located only a few blocks from the World
Trade Center. What he thought was the start of his “weekend,”
turned out to be a nightmare going beyond anything else he

Second grade students wrapped up their study of struc

architectural profession. OES parents and architects Susan
and Stuart Emmons (William ’12) brought their design firm
to the Lower School library, allowing the children lo inspect
building models and to learn how a project is designed from
start to finish.

Eighth graders assisted with additions to the Middle
School play structure as part of their service activities
during Leadership Days this fall. With assistance from Jon
von Behren, director of Buildings and Grounds, the stu
dents raised the safety rails that border the raised structure,
making it a safer spot for hanging out. Jon commended the
advisory group on their willingness to contribute to the
construction: “It was a lot of fun lo work on a hands-on

Capturing the Human Spirit in Masks
Each year the eighth grade GALA class reads The Lord of
the Flies by William Golding. Students create masks to rep
resent a character from the book, a natural element or a
selected theme such as compassion, wisdom or courage.
The students use the mask in a monologue to speak directly
to the boys in the book, especially in regard to resisting the
temptation toward violence. According to teacher Steve
Brennan, “The focus of this effort is on how to bring the
best qualities of the human spirit to the forefront.”

Trick or Treat for UNICEF
“Trick or treat for UNICEF” was the message shared by
students from Mrs. Hunger's fifth grade class during a
recent chapel service. The children dressed in Halloween
costumes presented a skit to other Lower School students,
reminding them of the opportunity to raise funds for
UNICEF while trick-or-treating on Halloween night. Money
raised this year will be used to assist children in Afghanistan.

Coming Full Circle
in the Same House
hen the 71st session of the Oregon legislature was
called to order on January 8, 2001, two individuals
with lies to Oregon Episcopal School stood among the 60
members of the House of Representatives wailing to be
sworn into office. One was Representative Ben Westlund of
Bend, and the other was Representative Elizabeth “Betsy”
Johnson of Scappoose.
Ben graduated from Bishop Dagwell Hall in 1968, one of
10 young men who made up the graduating class that year.
During his lime at BDH. Ben had played on the varsity soccer
team, ran on the track team, belonged to both the ski and
rifle clubs, and was a dorm monitor. He also had the honor
of being elected to the position of student body president.
Betsy, a 1969 graduate of St. Helen’s Hall, also had an
active student life. As one of the 18 young women who
made up the 1969 graduating class, Betsy’s involvement
included everything from the Altar Guild and Foreign
Affiliations, to the National Honor Society and the Modern
Dance Club. And like Ben, Betsy also had the honor of being
elected to the position of student body president.
At the time that Ben and Betsy attended BDH and SHH,
the two schools shared the current OES campus, although
most activities were kept separate. According to Ben and
Betsy, the students ate together in the cafeteria, and possibly
shared a class or two. For the most part, however, the

faculty and staff attempted to keep the boys and girls apart.
Despite this “corralling” by teachers and administrators, Ben
and Betsy admit that it was hard to keep the two groups sep
arated. Therefore, it was inevitable that Ben and Betsy would
know each other as students. However, they had no idea
that the roads that brought them to BDH and SHH, and then
led them away in opposite directions after graduation,
would cross again in the Oregon legislature earlier this year
FOLLOWING HER FAMILY'S LEAD

When you learn about Betsy’s politically active family, it
isn’t surprising the path she look after leaving SHH would
lead her to the state legislature. Betsy’s father, Sam Johnson,
was a seven-term member of the Oregon State Legislature
and the mayor of Redmond, OR. Her mother, Becky, was
appointed by four governors to serve on various state-level
education boards and other commissions.
When Betsy graduated from SHH, she was very focused
on going to college, although the thought of a political life
was not out of the question. After graduating from Carleton
College and then the Northwestern School of Law al Lewis
and Clark College, Betsy went on to establish Transwestern
Helicopters, Inc., a helicopter company which she owned
and operated for almost 20 years.
During this time, Betsy followed her parents’ footsteps in

serving the community in a variety of capacities. She has had
the privilege of serving as a board member for numerous
non-profit organizations, including Docrnbecher Children’s
Hospital, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Oregon Health
Sciences Foundation, and the Portland branch of the Federal
Reserve Bank. In 1993, Betsy was appointed to manage the
State Aeronautics Division of the Oregon Department of
Transportation, a position she held until 1998, when she
became vice president for legislative affairs for the Oregon
Pilots Association.
Betsy’s involvement in and commitment to her local com
munity of Scappoose, and to the broader Oregon
community, has not gone unnoticed. As early as 1981,
“Oregon Magazine” named Betsy as one of Oregon’s 100
most powerful women. In 1994, OES awarded her with the
Distinguished Alumni Award. Last year, Betsy was identified
as one of the lop 10 most influential residents of greater
Portland by The Business Journal.
Her involvement in numerous civic, community, and
political activities prepared Betsy for her current role as slate
representative for District 1, a position to which she was
elected in 2000.

“I used my youth wisely.”
Upon his graduation from BDH in 1968, Ben says he had
no political aspirations. Instead, he headed to the drier
climate of Eastern Washington and Whitman College, where
he received a great deal of attention as the first BDH gradu
ate to attend Whitman. After earning a bachelor’s degree in
education and history, Ben returned to the Willamette
Valley in order to attend graduate school al the University of
Oregon. It was there that the road to his current political
position truly began.
Ben says that how he got into politics is a demonstration
of what real life is all about. He recalls silling in a classroom
al Oregon with BDH classmales Dan Driscoll and John
Floweree, listening to a professor talk about the vast
resources of diatomaceous earth in Eastern Oregon. This
type of soil is formed by the fossil deposits of a microscopic
one-celled alga with a stony cell wall that exists in sea and
fresh water.
Ben, Dan and John look the lead of their professor.
Together they moved to Eastern Oregon, scavenged equip
ment needed to mine the diatomaceous earth, and created a
company that produced various household and industrial
products from the fossil material, the most notable being
kilty litter.
In lhe 1980s, Ben sold his interest in the business, bought
a catilc ranch in Wheeler County and moved to lhe small
town of Mitchell. There he got into lhe registered catlie
business, buying the finest catlie available and selling lheir
genetic products around the world.
This route, which led Ben to lhe high desert of Central
Oregon, also brought him to former Speaker of lhe House
Lyn Lundquist. Ben attributes Lyn with planting the seed in
the back of his brain about potentially getting involved in
politics. Ben’s daydream of a political career moved into
high gear one morning in 1996 when he called Lyn to
discuss the idea. About two weeks later, after many hours of

Ben spent much of his youth in the Mojave Desert area of
Southern California, attending a military academy with the
idea of perhaps going on to West Point or Annapolis after
graduation. His plans changed drastically, however, when
his parents moved to the Portland area and he entered
Bishop Dagwell Hall in the fall of 1966.
Ben found the differences in climate, school history, and
class size to be shocking. After being one of 150 high school
juniors in a military academy, Ben discovered himself living
in lhe verdant Willamette Valley, attending an Episcopal
school with only nine classmates. Ben adapted to his new
environment, at least temporarily, and now wryly remarks,

soul searching and discussions with his family, Ben decided
to run for the District 55 House seat. He figured that even if
he didn’t win the race, the campaign would at least be edu
cational and interesting.
Ben says his mother prepared him for a loss as he under
took his first political campaign, but the feedback he
received on the campaign trail encouraged him. He felt he

Ben acknowledges the difficulties of his role as co-chair of
this powerful committee. “The budgeting process is intense,
demanding and high-pressure, where each session 1 receive
thousands of requests for funding. My job is to give each

Betsy has repeated Ben’s accom

accomplishments of Ben, and he

THE BELL SOCIETY
The Bell Society honors and
recognizes individuals who have
either made a current gift to (he
Endowment or included Oregon
Episcopal School in their estate
plans. In the past year the school
has received gifts from trustees,
alumni, faculty, current and past
parents, and members of the
greater Portland community.
A gift to the Endowment pro
vides funds that continue to grow,
in perpetuity, for the benefit of the
entire school community. By gen
erating income beyond tuition, the
Endowment directly helps stu
dents and teachers at Oregon
Episcopal School through
increased funding for student
financial aid, faculty salaries, teacher
professional development, and
enrichment programs for students.
A gift to Oregon Episcopal
School Endowment allows the
school to attract and retain teachers
and students of the highest quality.

OES celebrated its first all-school
homecoming on October 11, cheered
on by an enthusiastic crowd of OES
fans and Aardy the Aardvark, the
school’s jaunty mascot. The MS and US
boys’ soccer teams and the US girls’JV and
Varsity volleyball teams had highly competi
tive matches, with two victories and a tie on
the soccer field and a victory on the volleyball
court. Students from LS Extended Care con
tributed several spirit-raising banners with
help from EC assistant director Jennifer
Lavender. Also on hand were the exuberant
LS and MS pep squads. The fun-filled day,
organized by US parent Kathy Wiest, included
a MS-organized latte bar, a booth featuring
Anthill spirit products, and a family barbecue
dinner. US fans continued the festivities with
dancing and hanging out at their own homecoming evening event.

OREGON
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL

When Ben Sadler graduated in the
spring of 2001, he left OES with more
than a quality education documented
by the diploma held in his hand. He
also left with a place in the school’s
history as one of only two students
who had earned 12 athletic “letters” for
participating on the school’s varsity
sports teams. Ben had spent his four
years in the Upper School playing
soccer, basketball and lacrosse al the
varsity level, in order to gamer those
dozen letters. Who was the first
student to achieve this goal? Kris Van
Hatcher, the school’s athletic director
for 26 years and a 1970 graduate of
Bishop Dagwell Hall.
According to the OES Upper School
Handbook, “Coaches will set their own
standards for giving athletic letters to
Varsity players ... Coaches look for
loyally, altitude, and diligence from
players to whom they wish to award a
letter.” So, the accomplishment shared
by Ben and Kris didn’t occur just
because they had the ability to play on
the varsity teams, but because they
brought something more to the sport
and to each team.
When Kris came to Bishop Dagwell
Hall in 1966, he didn’t have a goal of
earning 12 letters. What he wanted to
do was to play competitively and as
much as possible at the varsity level.
And so he did. During his four years at
BDH, Kris played on the varsity teams
and received letters in soccer, basket
ball, tennis and lacrosse. He attributes
his successful participation on these
teams to his organizational ability and
discipline.
Kris also admits that playing on the
various sports teams required him to
sacrifice free time that he might have
spent in other endeavors. Although the
focus of Kris’ life may have been on the
playing field, he made a commitment
to play and succeed in sports and to do
well academically.
Kris’ devotion to competitive sports
went beyond the after-school practices

and games. During his junior and
senior years at BDH, Kris assisted his
math teacher who also coached the
Middle School basketball teams. This
required Kris to coordinate his free
period during the school day to coin
cide with a Middle School P.E. class,
enabling him to take on the role of
coach’s assistant.
His effort and determination did not
go unnoticed by the school’s faculty
and staff. When Kris graduated in the
spring of 1970 with plans to attend
Springfield College in Massachusetts,
Fred Wood, principal of BDH, sug
gested that there might be a job
wailing for Kris al BDH after he got his
college degree. And in his senior year
at Springfield, Kris received a phone
call from Mr. Wood offering him a
position as P.E. teacher, dorm parent
and coach for three sports. Without
much hesitation, Kris accepted the
offer. The following year in 1975, Kris
was named Athletic Director, a role
that he still holds after 26 years.
Kris says that his time at BDH as a
student prepared him for his current
role by teaching him the benefits of

who graduated from OES in 1998

28

▲ Kris Van Hatcher during his

discipline, the importance of doing the
right thing, the rewards of working
hard to be better, and the value of
community. He also learned organiza
tional skills while al BDH, especially
important now when it comes to bud
geting his available time between
various demanding activities.
The factors of Kris’ successful ath
letic career al BDH carried over into
his adult life. His office wall is covered
with the plaques and awards he has
received over the years. He has been
chosen as Head Coach for both the
Girls Oregon All-Star Soccer Team and
the Oregon All-Star Lacrosse Team. He
has been appointed to the National
Soccer Rules Committee for high
schools for the past four years. His
accomplishments also include being
selected as Oregon High School Girls’
Soccer Coach of the Year; Region 7
National Girls’ Soccer Coach of the
Year; and two times as the 2A Oregon
Athletic Director of the Year. Despite
his obvious success, Kris remains
modest about his accomplishments,
saying, “I try to do my job. Awards are
not what I’m shooting for.”
Over the years al OES, Kris has seen
a constant change and improvement to
the OES sports program. This includes

the addition of a Middle School athletic
program, which could not have
occurred without the purchase of the
facilities at SPARC. He also notes the
switch from a focus on competitive
athletics to one of physical education
for all students, not just those who
want to compete on a team. Finally, he
mentions the improvements to the OES
athletic facilities, such as the
Yanagitani track and the recent addi
tion of the scoreboard and field lights.
Kris has seen many student athletes
come and go at OES, including Ben
Sadler. Kris watched as Ben’s athletic
skills and abilities improved, along
with his leadership qualities, during
his four years of competing on the
varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse
teams. “Ben is an incredible athlete. It
is impressive how he came in as a
freshman and lettered in three sports,”
remarks Kris. “Ben succeeded at all
three sports and enjoyed them, without
the need for year-round training. Ben is
probably one of the best athletes that
ever attended OES.”
Just as Kris remains modest about
his accomplishments, so does Ben. He
grew up at OES as the son of faculty
member Lynne Sadler, and earned the
designation of “lifer” by virtue of
attending the school since his pre
school days. During this lime, Ben says
his perspective on sports at OES

A Ben Sadler showed early promise in
athletics, playing throughout Middle
and Upper School at OES.

changed. “In Lower School, I idolized
the Lipper School players as they
seemed so large and great at what they
did. In Middle School, there seemed to
be less emphasis on competing on the
sports teams. When lacrosse started,
however, it seemed as if the whole
school got excited about it.”
Lacrosse was also a sport about
which Ben got excited. Unlike soccer
and basketball that he had played most
of his life, Ben didn’t start with lacrosse
until he got a stick in his 8th grade P.E.
class. As Ben tells the story, “Coach
Van Hatcher handed it to me and said,
‘You’ll need this in high school.’” Ben
used that stick to earn four of his varsity
letters and to gain recognition as a High
School All-American lacrosse player.
Like Kris, Ben also had to balance
his student life between academics and
athletics. However, he didn’t consider
it a balancing act. He had always been
involved in sports, and playing com
petitively was just part of his
structured day. “Besides, being able to
play on a team gave me the incentive to
gel my homework done quickly,” he
says. He also admits that he did not set
out to earn 12 varsity letters; he only
considers it as a “nice accomplish
ment.” Il is even nicer considering that
Ben was also on the Honor Roll for the
four years that he played competitively
year-round.
In reflecting upon matching the
accomplishment of Coach Van
Hatcher, Ben says he considers “Hatch”
as a friend more than as a coach and
acknowledges their common back
ground of loving to play sports and
leach others. He adds, “I wish I could
have seen Hatch play in his heyday.”
When asked what they consider as
their greatest accomplishments while
at OES, you might think that Kris and
Ben would include the earning of their
12 varsity letters or being recognized as
one of the best in what they do.
However, neither mentions these
achievements. Ben talks about the
ability to compete on the different
teams while keeping open time to
study and socialize. Kris humbly iden
tifies the environment that he has
created for sports at OES. This sup
portive yet competitive environment is
the result of a no-cut policy that
encourages all students to participate

no matter what level of skill they bring
to the game. He has found that the
competitive players support their less
skilled teammates, thus resulting in a
high level of student participation.
Ben encourages prospective and
current OES students to participate on
lhe sports teams, saying, “It won’t
overtake your life. Playing sports pro
vides you with another level of
experience, one that you may remem
ber more than a score on a math test.
The relaxed atmosphere allows you to
play, win games and have a good lime.”
Speaking as a parent of current OES
students (Addison ’06 and Dalton ’03),
Kris appreciates how the school
encourages a balance between athletics
and academics. He wants his sons to
enjoy playing competitive sports and
do well in school, and not have a one
sided approach where they focus on
one or lhe other. It isn’t an “either or”
situation, but one where a student can
fully participate in both. After all, Kris
reflects, “Athletics offer so many life
skills and experiences. They leach you
about working hard as a team, not
giving up, and learning how to handle
both failure and success.”
What else would you expect from an
individual who played well, showing a
dedication to his teams that went
above and beyond, earning him 12
varsity letters for his “loyalty, attitude,
and diligence.” ■

A Letter to
the Alumni

◄ Marietta Kuykendall '55,
Alumni Association President.
Above: From the 1955 year
book, Marietta, in her "while
bucks," gets acquainted with
students visiting from Sweden
and Italy.

Dear Fellow Alumni,

I

o

R E G O N
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL

Getting acquainted with a new person is an adventure. Do
you have something in common? Can you relate to this
person? Is this person friendly, funny, quiet or thoughtful?
Getting acquainted takes time, but it’s worth it. The process
is similar if you are gelling acquainted with a new school or
a new job. Getting reacquainted is similar, but there is the
history upon which you may draw.
Have you had the opportunity to gel reacquainted with
OES? Perhaps you can lour the campus and visit with those
who are here today. Alumni are encouraged to attend many
OES activities. OES and the Alumni Board have planned
many events specifically for alumni. Most are in the
Portland area, but events are also planned for Seattle,
Boston, New York City and San Francisco this year. Make
contact with some of your classmates. Class years ending
with a “2” or a “7” are featured al reunion this year. Don’t
forget to let us know what you are doing so it can be pub
lished in The OES Belltower. At least be sure that we know
where you and all your classmales are.
A primary goal of the Alumni Board is to facilitate com
munication between alumni as well as between the school
and alumni. We meet al least five limes a year. We have
members from St. Helen’s Hall, Bishop Dagwell Hall and
OES representing all decades from 1954 to 1995. We are
here to represent you.
I would like to thank Chuck Reynolds for the excellent job
he has done as the president of the Alumni Association for the
past two years. His insight as an alumnus, a former faculty
member and a current OES parent has been invaluable. We
are fortunate that he will continue as a member of the board.
When I joined the OES Alumni Board a few years ago, I
30

thoroughly enjoyed gelling acquainted with the other
members. However, I fell a need to get acquainted with OES
itself, or was it reacquainted? Was this a school I could rec
ognize or not?
I attended St. Helen’s Hall in the fifties. We went to school
in the old building al 13th and Hall streets in downtown
Portland. If you have seen some of the black and while pic
tures of girls in what were navy uniforms, navy blazers and
while blouses, look for one of those in while buck shoes and
that is me. I graduated with a class of 18 after having
attended throughout my high school years.
Today, as 1 lour the OES campus, visit classes, speak with
teachers, staff and students, I feel very much al home. Of
course, the old building is gone. The uniforms for older stu
dents are gone and those for the younger students are much
more reasonable. The curriculum is more extensive and
appropriate for the 21st century. The graduating classes are
much larger than 18. However, the class sizes are still small.
The faculty is still striving for excellence. Chaplains are still
available to visit with students. The spirit of St. Helen’s Hall
is very much alive at OES.
We would appreciate the opportunity to gel reacquainted
with you. I have found the alumni of all eras to be an out
standing group of people. Let us hear from you.

OES was greatly saddened to hear of
the death of Sally Reed Stout. Her
presence in the OES alumni commu

be greatly missed. After graduating
from St. Helen’s Hall, Sally went on to
graduate from the University of
Oregon. During World War II, she
served in the US Women’s Army
Corps, returning afterwards to marry
Lansing Stout, Sr. She served for over
20 years as a piano teacher at Lewis
and Clark College. Sally was a faithful
member of the OES community, best
known for her wonderful history of
the Hall: Saint Helen’s Hall, The First

counted on as a reference for school
history. She was a faithful volunteer
with a warm heart. In 1998, the

In Memoriam

Apparently I’m incapable of keeping
my mind made up! After transferring
from the University of Chicago to Case
Western Reserve University after only
one year, I have decided to change
majors. I was a geology major, pursu
ing my kindergarten dream of being a
paleontologist. I’ve decided to give
writing a try, instead, and to that end,
I’ve become an English major (geology
minor). You never know whether you
can make it if you never try! Please,
English teachers, don’t rub the Science
department’s nose in it too much. I still
love my dinosaurs! Wish me luck.

As you finish up your financial affairs for 2001, you will likely be thinking about your charitable
giving goals and aspirations. Here are a few questions to help you plan:

1. Am I aMe, fo Mafc& a tfiarifable- ^iff fo

in 7-001?

The close of the calendar year, coupled with our current economic and political times, means
you are probably receiving many charitable requests from worthwhile organizations. During
this period, we hope you will remember OES and our ongoing financial needs. We are eager to
conclude this year in good financial shape so we can confidently face the opportunities and
challenges of the future. Your special year-end gift will strengthen us considerably. Of course, if
you have already made your gift to OES this year, we want to thank you once again.

2. Whaf are-

fax otli^fion^ for 7-001?

Many taxpayers consult with their accountants before the end of the year to determine tax lia
bility. Perhaps you’ve done this already or maybe you simply have a good idea where you stand.
In any case, we encourage you to take advantage of the tax benefits offered by the government.

y Po I harfc appre-6-iafe-d Qtoofc. ok re-al

I c^ould donate fo OE>S?

You may find yourself in a situation where you want to give more to Oregon Episcopal School
but cannot afford to decrease your annual income. Please consider these options:

A Gift of Stock
In most cases, the out-of-pocket cost of your gift is reduced substantially due to the "double"
tax benefit you realize when you contribute appreciated stock.
• First, you are entitled to an income tax charitable deduction for the full market value of
appreciated stock if it has been held for at least one year.
• Second, you pay no capital gains tax on the transfer or the sale of the stock by OES.

A Gift of Real Estate
Consider the family who purchased raw land years ago at a very low price; as an example,
$5,000. Now the land is appraised at $100,000, and the capital gains tax has slowed down any
ideas of selling it.
• The land could be donated to OES as a named capital or endowment gift; both would leave a
long legacy in the family’s name.
• The land could go into a trust, creating income for named family members for life or a period
of years and naming OES as the remainder beneficiary.

To help further your year-end gift, please call Kevin Cott, Director ofAnnual and Planned
Giving, in our Development Office at 503-768-3179 or email at cotek@oes.edu.
