A Letter from

the Head of School
Dear Friends,

In this issue we highlight the lives and work of some of our faculty.
We know that for each generation of students at St. Helen’s Hall,
Bishop Dagwell Hall, and Oregon Episcopal School it has been the
extraordinarily high quality of the teaching and the warm personal
relationships with faculty that have been the hallmark of students’
experience. That tradition continues.

Jack O’Brien represents a group of teachers who have been here
for many years, personifying the values and culture of the school.
These faculty set the tone for newcomers, eagerly welcome back
alumni with whom they often keep up lively correspondence, and
insure that the mission and traditions of the school are passed to
the next generation of students. We are all deeply in their debt.
Peter Langley represents the new. Rob Brisk, Head of Upper
School, offered the biology position to Peter after an extensive,
worldwide search. We have, in Peter, a highly experienced biology
expert, dedicated to student research, committed to the values of
the school, and eager for the kinds of relationships with students
that the OES culture fosters.

The articles by Debby Schauffler and Lisa Lockwood demonstrate
the full range of activities in which our faculty engage on behalf of
students. Debby’s wide knowledge of the classical world was
greatly enriched by her summer experience. Because of her
insight and her excellent writing skills, she was chosen from the
whole group to write the definitive article about the trip for the
sponsoring organization. Lisa’s trip indicates her commitment to
students and to experiential learning outside as well as within the
classroom.
These are but a few samples of great teaching and learning that
happen daily at OES. We invite all of you to come and visit our
classrooms at all levels of the school. You will wish you could be
in school again yourselves!

Yours,

Dulany O. Bennett

Twenty Years ...
A Profile ofJack O’Brien, Chair of the Performing & Fine Arts Department
On September 6, 2000, Jack
O’Brien began his 21st year at
Oregon Episcopal School, one of
only a handful of teachers who
have been at OES for 20 years or
more. In an age where teaching
has become an endangered pro
fession, one wonders what moti
vates a person to devote himself to
teaching at the same institution for
so many years. For Jack, the
answer is simple: Relationships.

“It’s the ability to form close rela
tionships with people that makes
OES a special place to teach,” said
Jack. "I enjoy being able to relate
to my students one-on-one, some
thing that is hard to do in a school

with thousands of students. I have
also had the pleasure of working
together for years with a wonderful
group of colleagues, who have
stayed for many of the same rea
sons I have. It is so nice to work
with people that you respect and
who are genuinely good people.”
Jack moved to Portland in 1979,
fresh from California where he
received his Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree from the College of Arts &
Crafts in Oakland and the Art
Institute of San Francisco. His first
assignment at OES was driving an
OES school bus, a part-time job
which allowed him the freedom to
pursue a career in the arts. How

does an artist-turned-bus driver
become Chair of the Performing
and Fine Arts Department? Jack
attributes this life-changing event
to one man; then Upper School
Head Jim Dowell. Jim seemed to
sense that somewhere beneath the
surface of this aspiring artist/bus
driver lay the instinctive qualities of
a great teacher. “I had never, ever
once thought about being a
teacher,” said Jack. “Not through
high school, college, even driving
the bus. But Jim saw something in
me that I didn’t know was there,
and he thought he’d take a chance
on me. So I got enough kids who
were interested, and started teach
ing a stagecraft activity. We didn’t
have a shop, didn’t have any tools,
and didn’t know exactly what we
were doing. But we did it. We
learned a lot those first couple of
years, and I gradually started
teaching more courses until the
position of chair opened up.”
Jack has since gone back to
school and earned a graduate
degree from the University of
Portland in scenic design. Each
year, he teaches classes in film and
video, drawing, stagecraft, paint
ing, and Theatre Troupe as well as
directing several plays. By even the
most conservative estimates, Jack
has touched the lives of over 2,000
students. Today, these students
can be found pursuing careers as
scientists, CEOs, graduate stu
dents, college students, and yes,
even artists.

Over the last 20 years Jack has
been involved in the production of
over 50 plays in the Great Hall, a
challenge in itself. “Producing a
play in the Great Hall is a mixed
blessing,” claims Jack. “We have
to build the complete set in the
shop at SPARC, then totally break
it down, truck it up to the Great
Hall, and re-assemble it. And we

▲ Biology teacher Peter Langley examines the properties ofpolysaccharides with his students.

Year One ...
A Profile of Peter Langley, Upper School Biology
In September 2000, OES wel
comed ten new faculty members to
its community. No one traveled as
far to be here as Englishman Peter
Langley, who has spent the last
sixteen years teaching in interna
tional schools around the world.
Peter arrived at OES fresh from six
years in Switzerland, where he
taught various levels of high school
science at The American
International School of Zurich,
Switzerland. Prior to Zurich, he
spent ten years teaching science to
high school students at the
Yokohama International School in
Japan. “I love international teach
ing,” said Peter. “Ten years in
Japan, followed by six years in
Zurich, and now OES, which for me
- a British citizen - is still an inter
national experience!”
What brings a teacher halfway
around the world to Oregon
Episcopal School? “I find OES pos

sesses many of the assets I look
for in a quality school,” said Peter.
“First of all, the Science depart
ment is very strong, which is of
particular importance to me as a
biology teacher. The school has a
fine reputation, and during the
interview process I found the peo
ple here were very fair, welcoming,
and genuinely proud of their
school. They were quite keen that I
would like the experience here.
Additionally, and most importantly,
I sensed that the school has strong
leadership and vision. Dulany
Bennett, the Head of School, has a
clear and strong vision for the
school. Bill Lamb, Chair of the
Science Department, has a driving
ambition for the sciences at OES
that includes an innovative
research component and brand
new facilities. I like that very much
about this school - it gives the
school a specific distinctiveness
and passion."

Peter was born in the northwest of
England in the county of
Lancashire. He went off to boarding
school on an island north of Wales
at the age of 8. “I found the experi
ence to be extraordinarily nervewracking at first,” said Peter. “But
the weight of generations was
behind me. You accept it because
this is what your parents, your
grandparents, and their grandpar
ents have done for generations
before you." As a teacher, he has
continued to be associated with
independent schools, finding the
environment suits him quite well. “I
love the spirit of independent
school teaching," said Peter. “I
enjoy the variety, the contact with
students and peers. It never gets
boring."

Peter loves teaching and the
opportunity to possibly light a
spark in one of his students. “You
often have a day when a particular

have to build it extra strong due to
the fact that 240 kids are around
and on it all the time. The positive
side is that when we re-assemble
the set over the weekend, the stu
dents return on Monday to discov
er a magical transformation, such
as a two-story Athenian Hotel
appearing out of nowhere. That’s
nice because it attracts kids who
may not have expressed any inter
est in theater before to the activity
or program. Unfortunately, the
space is very confining. It limits
the variety of stage configurations,
turns the library and classrooms
into dressing rooms and isn’t a
very comfortable place for audi
ence members to watch a play.”
Jack is also involved in scenic
design work for various regional
theater companies such as Artists

subject is touched on and all the
ears prick up and you’ve got their
antennae pointed towards you and
you have their undivided atten
tion,” said Peter. “That’s a great
moment. And you never know with
your students - you may or may
not make a difference. It’s the
great joyful unknown of a teacher that continuity of fire and interest
that you have sparked in some
body in your class, and it passes
on to that person’s child in 20
years time, then down to the
grandchildren and so on. You nev
er know - but I think it happens.”

Repertory Theater and Tygres
Heart Shakespeare Company. This
year he has cut back to an 80%
teaching load to help better bal
ance his work and life outside of
OES. When asked to look ahead
20 years to the year 2020, Jack
says the first thing he sees is a
retired Jack O’Brien. But he hopes
that he will see the addition of a
performing arts building for theater
and music. “I’ve seen the art facili
ties improve dramatically from the
days in Scott House when we
used dorm rooms for art studios,”
said Jack. “I’d like to see the per
forming arts have a permanent
place to call home. But I hope that
I will also see a school where stu
dents continue to connect with
their teachers the way they do
now. I think it is the one thing that
really separates us from any other
school and makes the experience
here unique. No amount of money
or facilities will matter if that
doesn’t stay the same.”

Peter is looking forward to becom
ing more broadly involved in the
OES community beyond his role
as a biology teacher. In Zurich and
Yokohama, he indulged his love of
the arts by participating in theater
productions, singing tenor in the
school choir, running speech con
tests and organizing conferences.
“I have a number of interests, and
that’s one of the reasons I love

being in a school community,”
said Peter. “There are great
opportunities here to participate in
all different types of activities. Peter
Langley will be on this planet for
only a limited number of years, and
I want to make the most of them.”

DAVID LOWELL
New Lower School
Assistant Head
Diarmond (Dari) Bash joins us
from Maryland where he was
teaching in the Baltimore public
school system. Dari holds a BA in
Chemistry from Whittier College
and will be teaching Math and
Chemistry as well as coaching
Volleyball. “I have truly enjoyed my
first few months at OES,” says
Dari. “I particularly like being a part
of such a wonderfully conscien
tious and responsible school com
munity.”

Peter Langley brings rich interna
tional experience to our OES
Upper School science department.
Born in England, he joins us from
The American International School
of Zurich, Switzerland to teach
Upper School Biology. Prior to
teaching in Switzerland, he
enjoyed ten years at the
Yokohama International School in
Japan. He moved to Portland this
summer with his wife Kathyrn and
4-year-old daughter Olivia. (See
article page 5.)

Debbie Smith, who has worked
with our mock trial team in the
recent past, joins OES as a full
time history teacher in the Upper
School. Debbie received her BA
from St. Mary’s College and her JD
from the University of Oregon. She
practiced law for four years before
following her heart into the teach
ing field. Debbie states, “Teaching
history to high school students at
OES is truly my dream job."

John Walker joins OES as
Director of Upper School
Technology. He holds a BS from
the University of Washington, and
brings a wealth of knowledge and
leading edge technology skills to
the Upper School. He is looking
forward to developing a number of
exciting and innovative computer
classes for our students during the
coming year.

This fall, OES warmly welcomed
former fourth grade teacher David
Lowell as Assistant Head of the Lower
School. David has been teaching at
OES since 1995, where he found
teaching fourth grade a wonderful
experience. “Ac this age they have a
raw enthusiasm for learning. They
have basic skills and want to acquire
knowledge.” He has a BA from
Dartmouth College and an MA from
Lesley College, and before coming to
OES he directed several adventure
camps and wilderness programs.
When not in the classroom, David
enjoys being outdoors. Depending on
the weather he can be found at the
coast searching for the perfect wave to
surf, in the mountains working on
backcountry skiing skills or hiking in
some beautiful wilderness area.
In his newly created position as
Assistant Head, David will be assisting
Head of Lower School Sidney Gold
with teacher supervision and evalua
tion, overseeing the Extended Care
program, and other general adminis
trative duties. “I feel fortunate to
work at OES,” said David. “I am
challenged by the complexity of the
school and excited by working to
solve the variety of problems that
come my way each day. I am inspired
by the leadership of the administra
tion, excited by the learning teachers
are facilitating in their classrooms,
and appreciative of parents’ efforts to
help their children become life long
learners. There is nothing like partici
pating in the education of children,
helping them make new discoveries,
develop new skills and exchange
wonderful ideas.”

FACULTY ADVENTURES

Two teachers bring new
insights and perspectives
back to their OES
classrooms.

Mideast
Odyssey
Debby Schauffler,
Upper School Humanities
“Look, the pyramids” I said to
Karen. “Impossible. It has to be Las
Vegas,” she said in disbelief.

OREGON
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL

It was almost impossible to believe
that we were actually in Egypt. We
posed for a photo in front of the
King Zhoser’s step pyramid, which
was the first slide we had ever
shown to our Humanities students
when we taught together at OES in
1990. Karen Talus and I had taught
together for nine years before she
returned to New York. We had
been reunited at the Middle East
Institute, a whirlwind exploration of
religion and interfaith dialogue in
Athens, Cairo and Jerusalem
offered by the Council for
Spirituality and Ethics in Education.
Twenty independent school teach
ers and heads traveled together for
a two-week exploration of religious
and historical ideas and topics.
One of the things that had attracted
me to the program was the con
nection of many sites to subjects
and cultures that I teach every year:
Egypt, Israel, Greece, Islam,

Judaism, and early Christianity.
This Institute gave me an
incredible opportunity to gain a
better understanding of reli
gions and historical issues in
the Middle East. It was experi
ential education at its best - I
have looked at maps of Egypt
for years, but the reality of see
ing the map-like line between
dry brown desert and rich green
fields next to the Nile was
astonishing. Of course the
Egyptians worshipped a river
that could magically transform
death into life in such an imme
diately visible way.

“How was your trip?” I had a
hard time knowing how to say
anything intelligent about the
two weeks of the Institute when
I returned. Usually I would pick
an adjective: “Amazing.
Exhausting. Incredible.” If my
questioner waited a bit, I might
add a qualifier: “Totally amaz
ing. Really incredible." Usually
the conversation moved on. If
not, I could half-joke about the
way we were never sure
whether we were part of a sci
ence project about sleep depri
vation or one about dehydra
tion. In fact, I found myself
avoiding people who might ask
me about the trip until I had had
time to think more about it, later
in the summer. Perspective
helped. The distant view is, of
course, easier to make simple that up close, people and
places are more difficult and
complex. From a distance, the
Great Pyramid at Giza is
smooth and triangular, nicely

10

postcard-like against the sky and
desert. Up close, it is a made up of
uncountable large, bulky stones.
The shape is impossible to see
when you are standing next to it the photo I took from ground level
looks like a random jumble of
rocks. The engineering, measure
ment and planning that went into
its construction become invisible.
At the same time, you get a much
better idea of their size, and the
effort and communal power that
went into the building, something
that the distant picturesque view
doesn’t provide. Probably we need
both -distance and proximity- just
as we need two eyes in order to
focus and understand the world
visually.
Perspective was also a key to lis
tening to and understanding reli
gious ideas and beliefs. We met
clergy, scholars, eccentrics, jour
nalists, students and specialists,
and tried to sort out all the many
viewpoints. Dialogue between reli
gions in the Middle East meant dia
logue between Judaism, Islam and
Christianity - not the more inclusive
list of religions that American
teachers are more used to. Our
easy American viewpoints were
challenged frequently. It is easy for
us to talk about peace and equality;
it is harder to talk about them with
people who are, or feel they are,
under attack. It seemed impossible,
for example, to frame a question
about women in Egypt, because
the silence between the question
and the answer was full of too
many years of misunderstandings
and assumptions and assumptions

ABROAD
Costa Rican
Science
Lisa Lockwood, Middle School
Science & Humanities
For nearly one month this past July,
I had the rare and wonderful oppor
tunity to live and study in Costa
Rica with fifty fellow science teach
ers from around the United States. I
was accepted to participate in a
summer program run by the
Woodrow Wilson National
Fellowship Foundation and the
Organization for Tropical Studies,
focusing on global climate change
and the impact of humans on ter
restrial and aquatic ecosystems.
My study group had the good for
tune to be assigned to the remote
Palo Verde field study station in the
dry tropical forest of the
Guanacaste region and La Selva
Biological Reserve in the Caribbean
lowland forests. In effect, we stud
ied half the month in a dry tropical
forest and half the month in a wet
tropical forest.

While I will always remember the
incredible richness of Costa Rica,
from the abundance of rainforest
life to the beauty of the land and
people, some of the most impor
tant things I learned in the program
had nothing at all to do with Central
America. Instead, these lessons
came from being in the shoes of
my students at their most stressed,
most anxious to succeed, and most
overwhelmed by seemingly incom
prehensible amounts of new infor

□ RD XP2 SUPER

mation or academic requirements.
At the same time, there was the joy
of discovery, making new friends
and living in an entirely new culture.
There were night hikes through
waist deep swamps, visits to the
Dole banana plantation and the
surrounding Nicaraguan worker
compounds, predawn horseback
riding across plains filled with hun
dreds of wild horses, and watching
the fiery eruptions of Volcan Arenal
from hidden hot springs near the
base of the mountain. The incredi
ble diversity of the rainforest gener
ated constant stimulation for “mini
expeditions", discussions, inquiry
or simply quiet times of reflection.
And there was never a morning I
slept past 5:30 a.m., due to the
early light and the screaming
howler monkeys in the trees just
outside my windows.

This was not my first trip to Central
America. Previously I had taken 11
middle schoolers on a trip to
Guatemala and Belize for the pur
pose of exploring ancient Mayan
ruins in addition to SCUBA diving
off the coast of tiny Placencia. This
was my turn to be a student, to
experience living, travelling and
studying with a group of colleagues
from all over the United States. I
can say with conviction, however,
that my group functioned no differ
ently than any group of middle
schoolers I have taught or led.
Given the sparse conditions and
limited resources in these remote
regions of Costa Rica, my group
maintained a refreshingly juvenile
sense of humor which included
everything from practical jokes, to
singing to our bus driver Fernando,
to asking the same question at
least four times because not every
one was paying attention, to forget
ting the items which we were

ILFORD XP2 SUPER

specifically told to bring out on field
studies.

Of course, the academic focus of
the program was quite demanding.
For those that have ever experi
enced Science Fair at OES, imag
ine attempting to complete 4 sci
ence fair projects in 3 weeks! We
designed and performed our own
experiments as inspired through
the inquiry based learning process
- starting with general questions
and making them specific to our
environment and objectives. Our
days were spent working on both
individual and group projects. At
Palo Verde, I completed research
papers on The Effect of Different
Edge Types on the Abiotic
Characteristics of Primary and
Secondary Dry Forests and The
Filtration Effects of Palo Verde
National Park Wetlands on Rice
Field Agricultural Run Off. At La
Selva, my research papers included
Activity Patterns of the Atta
cephalotes (leaf cutter ant) Under
Different Variations of Light on
Native Tropical Plantation Trees
and A Population Study of
Dendrobates Pumilio off Primary
and Secondary Forest Trail
Systems. In all of my experiments,
there was an emphasis on the iso
lation and fragmentation of ecosys
tems in the context of global cli
mate change. I learned a
tremendous amount about the
dynamics of the rainforest and the
importance of biodiversity within
them.
As with any intense academic
experience, there were the times
when our small groups weren’t
working cooperatively because of
different learning styles. There were
times when the pressure to comcontinued on page 12

Mideast Odyssey continued from page 10
about assumptions. Sometimes
even a question that sounded to
us as though its answer should be
a matter of fact -were there slaves
in ancient Egypt? -was too loaded
with potential offense that we felt
like just not asking anything. Of
course, being teachers, we kept
talking, asking, exploring, and
questioning. Perspectives and
assumptions and opinions shifted
as we traveled - and we traveled
fast from place to place, from idea
to idea. Often the contrasts and
contradictions we experienced
were overwhelming, though they
were also sometimes very funny.
When I turned my back on the
Sphinx, I was facing the Funky
Abouzeid Brothers knick-knack
store and a Kentucky Fried
Chicken. Walking the Stations of
the Cross in Jerusalem, we saw an
Internet cafe directly across from
Station VII.

When I think about the Institute,
my brain is crowded with images
and impressions to sort out among them a hoopoe bouncing
about on the soft green lawn of a
garden outside Cairo, the swinging
chandelier in the Agia Ekaterina
church in Athens, which shows
that the Holy Spirit is present, the
profound carpeted, marbled still
ness and peace in the Al-Akhsa
mosque, the rocky hillside on the
outskirts of Jerusalem that hides

plete research became too much
for people and they temporarily
folded. There were times when the
computers really did lose docu
ments and people were forced to
start from scratch, at that moment,
at midnight before a paper was
due. And as with any great adven
ture there were a myriad of incred
ible experiences - dodging scorpi
ons on the way to the bathrooms,
being hit with pieces of mango
thrown by white faced monkeys,
avoiding the deadly fer de lance
snakes, listening to the Costa
Rican crowd at an indoor soccer

are things I will keep and sort for
myself as I continue to reflect on
my whole experience. They are
also things that will enrich my
teaching far beyond what I expect
ed. The Institute was amazingly
provocative of thought, helpfully
troubling in the questions it forced
me to think about, and fascinating
in the problems it illuminated. I

have no idea whether its most
important effect on me was pro
fessional or personal - probably, in
the end, some sort of combination
of the two - but like most of the
best experiences of my life it was
communal. A lot of what I liked
best was the same thing I like best
about teaching at OES - learning
and thinking and laughing and
answering hard questions as part
of a group with a common pur
pose. We were told in Athens that

the Orthodox Church doesn’t
believe that a priest who is alone
can celebrate communion, and I
guess I believe that people can’t
truly learn alone.

“Accept all offered boons” I read
in the Tao Te Ching the night
before I left to join the group in
New York. I am deeply grateful to
OES for the incredible commit
ment it has to faculty growth and
development - for the boon of
education, of opportunity, of chal
lenge that we have as members of
this community. The Institute was
expensive, and many of the other
teachers in the group had not
been totally funded by their
schools as I was. I believe that the
ultimate value to the school will
make the investment pay off. In
the Israel Museum, there is a tiny
ivory pomegranate, four centime
ters tall, with an inscription about
or to the priests of Yahweh - per
haps the only remaining physical
object from Solomon’s Temple.
Standing in front of it, I thought
about all the gold and cedar and
stone and decoration described in
the Book of Kings, and then about
this simple little kernel of history. I
keep it in my mind as a reminder
of a small thing that contains a
large thing, or many large things,

my mental images, these words

sent chills down my spine, feeding
chicken to a crocodile on the
Tempisque River, milking cows at

ing about the people around me.

My experience in Costa Rica was
rich in many ways. It was about
the science of inquiry, the process
of asking and answering scientific
questions, working with peers,
and experiencing a variety of
teaching styles. It was about
observing a richness of species
like nothing I had seen before,
dealing with the anxiety of due

dates, trying to make laptops work
in 100% humidity, and experienc
ing the beauty of the Costa Rican
culture. It is amazing how people
can come and go from our lives. It
is hard to believe that this incredi
ble group of people with whom I
shared, experienced and learned
so much were a part of my life for
just a month, yet they will forever
be a part of my fondest memories
of being a student again. I feel
privileged to have participated in
such a rewarding summer institute.

OES COMMUNITY LABYRINTH
All members of our OES communi
ty are invited to come and enjoy a
peaceful walk on the 40’ x 40‘
canvas labyrinth located in the
OES gym.

Although there is no “right way” to
walk a labyrinth, most people find
a pace and a purpose that suits
their individual needs at the
moment they step onto the path.

The labyrinth is an ancient pattern
found in many cultures and tradi
tions throughout the world. They
are often used for walking medita
tion, and can be considered a
metaphor for a journey, quest or
pilgrimage. The Labyrinth is a spiri
tual tool that helps reduce stress,
quiet the mind and open the heart.

The OES Community Labyrinth is
now available for Open Walks on
the second Monday of each month
from 7 pm-8:30 pm. In addition,
OES sponsors walks for Lower
School Children and teachers every
Tuesday morning from 7am-8am.

WILD WILD WEST AT OES
The OES Auction season is off to a
great start. The November 6th auc

evening with a big show of support
and enthusiasm from the OES
community! Thanks to those who
attended for sharing your great
ideas on how to make this a won

“Wild, Wild West at OES,” sched
uled for March 3, 2001, promises to
be an evening full of excitement,
great offerings, good friends, and
western fun, all for a terrific cause!
During this season of giving take a
few moments to decide about your
auction donation. Think of all those
items you love to bid on. Put
together a theme dinner at your
home or how about donating a gift
certificate? Sponsorships are avail
able again this year. Donation
forms and drop boxes are located
in the Lower, Middle and Upper
School offices. Make the holidays
bright by turning in your completed
donation forms before Christmas.
It’s a wonderful way to give to OES!

▲ Members of the Class of 1985 reminisce at Reunion.

The first reunion of the new millenium was held on June 10, 2000.
About 65 alumni and their families
gathered, ranging from the Class
of 1926 through the Class of 1995.
Following tradition, the 50th
anniversary class, the Class of

A Letter from the

Dear Fellow Alumni:
With one child in the high school, I
still drive down Nicol Road each
morning and revisit the OES cam
pus. This is a trip I still enjoy,
checking the wetlands, the golf
course, Fanno Creek, the reader
board, big trees and faces, familiar
and otherwise, around the bell
tower. There are several of us
alumni with our children attending
OES, involved in the daily
(parental) routines of school life. I
realize, however, that for most of
us alumni, the school is more a
part of our past than our present.
This is natural enough, given that it
is a part of growing up.
Nevertheless, it’s worth revisiting
the subject of our relationship to
OES from time to time.

OREGON
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL

It has been a real pleasure being
engaged with the Alumni Board for
the last several years. I have par
ticularly enjoyed the opportunity to
meet and talk with alumni whose
experience with the school over a
long reach of time provides histori
cal perspectives. OES has not only
existed under several other names
over the last sixty and more years,
it has changed outwardly very sig
nificantly. It has also gone through
times of troubles, of all manners,
and times of glory and achieve
ment. Yet, there are common
themes which identify the school’s

strengths over time, and these are
reflected in the lives of its alumni.
Among many of the people I've
met is a set of common values:
love for learning, compassion for
people, commitment to service,
high moral standards, sense of
humor and love for life. I’ve met
these people because they chose
to come to an OES event, speak
on campus, organize a class
reunion, serve on school-wide
committees or simply because
they drove down Nicol Road to
visit their school.

If you haven’t thought about it
recently, consider reshaping your
relationship with OES. Join the
Alumni Board’s effort to find the
best ways to stay in touch with
OES today and to support the
school’s mission. We hope to see
you at our upcoming alumni
events, at any regular school event
or simply sitting by the bell tower
after a drive down Nicol Road. We
are a part of OES, but only to the
extent that we create a meaningful
relationship to the school.

Alumni Survey Highlights
Last Spring, OES contracted with Intercept Research Corporation to con
duct a random telephone survey of OES alumni from the last ten years.
The survey was designed to help us evaluate how our alumni perceive
their experience at OES. When asked to give OES a grade for the quality
of its performance, OES received an overall grade point average of 3.75,
with 74% giving OES an “A” grade. When asked what they liked best
about their experience at OES, the top five responses were:

• Exceptional faculty and staff who are personable, interesting, nurturing
and care deeply about their students.
• Small class sizes resulting in individualized attention.
• The manageable size of the school, resulting in a caring community
most conducive for learning.
• High quality and standards of the academic program, creating an envi
ronment where knowledge and learning is emphasized, valued and
respected.
• The ability to establish personal relationships with teachers and other
students.

Additional highlights of the survey are summarized in the chart below.

October 21, 1999

Vivian Byers Carothers ‘37
March 24, 2000

Hazel’s daughter, Elizabeth told us
how fond her mother was of Saint
Helen's Flail, and of the wonderful
memories she had there. After SHH,
Hazel went on to get a Masters from
the University of Washington in
Librarianship. Hazel’s life was one
filled with family, service, and a real
love of life. "I think you would be
proud to claim her as one of your
alumni,” Elizabeth concluded.

tic seamstress, an expert quilter, and
unfailingly generous of her time,
energy, and her love. She leaves
behind her husband, 6 children, 12
grand children, and 2 great grand
children.

SOCIETY

The Bell Society honors and
recognizes individuals who have
either made a current gift to the
Endowment or included Oregon
Episcopal School in their estate
plans. In the past year the school
has received gifts from trustees,
alumni, faculty, current and past
parents, and members of the
greater Portland community.
A gift to the Endowment pro
vides funds that continue to grow,
in perpetuity, for the benefit of the
entire school community. By gen
erating income beyond tuition, the
Endowment directly helps stu
dents and teachers at Oregon
Episcopal School through increased
funding for student financial aid,
faculty salaries, teacher professional
development, and enrichment pro
grams for students.
A gift to Oregon Episcopal
School Endowment allows the
school to attract and retain teachers
and students of the highest quality.

Plan ahead.
• In addition to providing

for your designated heirs,
your retirement plan may
include an unintended but
substantial portion for the
government.

• Consider naming Oregon
Episcopal School as the
beneficiary of your IRA,
insurance policies, and

pension plan.
• By making a gift of your
retirement plan to OES,

you can continue to
receive income from the

assets while also getting a

for the

charitable tax deduction.

Future

Join other members of the community who are helping to secure our

Foundation for the Future.
When OES grandparents Jim and Barbara Herbold revised their wills,

they made sure to provide for the institutions

they care about and have been committed to during their lifetimes.

The Endowment is the foundation upon which all School operations rest.
Gifts to the Endowment will make it possible to maintain excellence at all levels
within the School, and will make an important difference in the

quality of education in the future.

Learn more about building our Foundation for the Future by calling the
OES Development Office and speaking
to Monica Brisk, Director of Capital Gifts at 503.768.3179.

By Avery Johnson ' 11
Mrs. Murray's Second Grade Class

It is time to put on perfume for the leaves

And change their uniform.
They watch the geese fly away
And they want to do it too.
So they fly away
With the wind
Who is calling to them.
They fall to the ground
After their flight
And change into dirt
So the plants can
Grow, grow, grow.
