"Education Is Our Business''

enrolling their girls and boys in our school, St. Helens
To parents
welcome. The education and well-being of your
Hall extends a warm
emphasis upon
children are our primary concerns. We place great
.
high standards of education, conduct, and behavior.
.-.uk, we are proud of the standards maintained and the achieve
ments recorded by our fine, historic school, founded in 1869, which on
a new campus, continues to provide the quality education needed, to
prepare children and youth for living in a changing and challenging
world.
We assume that you, as parents, have acquainted yourselves with our
aims, rules, and regulations and that you will wish to cooperate whole
heartedly in these matters. Success is reached by a threeway route:
parent - student - teacher. Four times a year individual reports are
sent out to parents of students in the Upper, Middle, and Lower
Schools. We hope you will keep in frequent touch with the teachers
of your daughter or son. We wish you to feel free to visit the Director
of the Hall, the Heads of the Middle and the Lower Schools, and
the Supervisor of the Preschool.
This Catalog Supplement is prepared to supply information and to
answer questions you may have. If there is additional information
you would like, we will be glad to give it to you either through
letter or personal interview.
GENERAL REGULATIONS
ABSENCES

Every effort should be made to keep each student in school and on
time, as absences and tardiness profoundly affect academic work. In
the case of an absence of a week or less caused by illness the stu
dent will have help in making up lost work. After a longer absence,
tutoring at the expense of the parent may be required.
Parents are requested not to ask for extension of vacation periods,
uc prolongation of vacation periods is totally unfair to the student
erse , her teachers, and her fellow students. Any absences just beor after vacation periods result in an automatic zero in every
i.v s ^lssed, except in cases of a signed doctors excuse indicating
dpnfaf Q-\ °u t^ie1 ^ness- The School also asks that all medical and
mpnfc i^ork j taken care of during vacation periods or that appoint
ments be made for Saturdays or after school hours.
CLASS PREPARATION

^11 students are expected to make school their main interest, Monto onrv^°U^r Friday, to the close of the school day. Parents are asked
at hom Gra 6- ln see*nS that children follow regular study schedules
theatr^Q6’ ^^Pt^ by telephone or TV. (Attendance at movies,
freaup^fi °r* P^.**08 should be discouraged on school nights). Parents
ule hprp ^ m(luh*e about a time schedule for home study. The schedsuggested applies to the needs of the average student.

HEALTH PROGRAM
Under the supervision of a resident nurse, a sound health program is
pursued. Careful daily inspection of the younger children is held. All
students returning after any illness must report to the nurse before
going to classes. These regulations serve to protect all the students.
The nurse will make necessary appointments with physicians or den
tists and will accompany resident students who are keeping such ap
pointments.

of the year. A full noon dinner is included. Arrangements for the months of June,
July, and August may be made with the Supervisor of the Preschool.

LUNCHEONS
The Upper and Middle School students regularly have their lunch
eon together in die dining room. Lower School students may bring their
lunches from home or have hot lunches at the School.
NOTE: Please read carefully the explanations under Incidental Ex
pense Accounts, Extraordinary Expenses, and Optional Services and
Activities.
The description and cost of uniforms are given under Dress Regulations.
Day students wishing transportation should check service and costs
under transportation heading. (See Optional Services)
INSURANCE
An accident insurance policy is taken out for each student. The
policy, available only because of the large number involved, covers
the student in the classroom, on the playground, at competitive games,
and on the way to and from school. The charge per school year,
payable first semester, is $2.40 for Preschool children and $5.00 for
Lower, Middle, and Upper School students.
SPECIAL REDUCTIONS
Children of clergymen receive 10 percent reduction on tuition. For
two siblings there is a 10 percent reduction on tuition; for three,
15 percent; for four or more, 25 percent.
INCIDENTAL EXPENSE ACCOUNTS
Each student is required to have on deposit an incidental account
for books, chapel cap rentals, concerts, plays, etc. Parents of resident
students may authorize dry cleaning, laundry, etc., to be charged
against this account. Parents must stipulate in writing the weekly
amount, if allowances are to be drawn from this account. The aver
age weekly amount is $2.00 to $3.00 per week, depending upon age
of student. The Hall deplores the granting of overly large allowances.
When the incidental account has been depleted, parents will receive
a report and be asked to replenish the account. This does not often
occur in the case of day students, but resident students will need
to have replenishment of the account from time to time during the
5

year, depending upon expenses that the parents wish
to have drawn
from it.
